Hello... so I am planning a family vacation. We are all from Colombia but now live in the states and really want to go back to enjoy the beaches of Colombia. I went to both places when I was little but really can't remember much of either place... and I am sure both cities have grown and changed much in the last 20 years. So right now, I am trying to debate which city to go to... or maybe we go to both... but where should we stay longer? where are the beaches nicer? how is the transportation from Cartagena to Santa Marta? is it safe? Is it better to get a taxi or rent a car? anyway... I know I have lots of questions... but if anyone out there can give me some advice ... I would greatly appreciate it.
It is hard to plan a family vacation... I should mention that my mother needs oxygen most of the time... which city is less polluted? Thanks a million!

I have visited both Santa Marta and Cartagena and have just recently come back from the latter. Both are extremely beautiful and yes Parque Tayrona that is near to Santa Marta is so amazing BUT I see that with your mother it would be difficult to travel through difficult terrain such as jungle. Other than that National Park, Santa Marta is quite ordinary and so I think Cartagena all in all would be better because it has something for the whole family.
Having come back from Cartagena and visiting it for the second time I think I might have a recommendation for you. From Cartagena there are a group of islands called Islas del Rosario that everybody knows but a friend of mine recommended I visit a lesser known group of islands called Las Islas de San Bernardo. I went to visit this island; anotherworlduk.com/luxury/…islamucura.htm Isla Mucura and the service was excellent.
The island is pristine with perfect beaches and shallow water which was very safe for my 5 year old to play in and the accommodation was excellent. Most nights we mingled with other guests in the bar area and watched the sun go down. The other benefit I was thinking about was that on the island, although very hot under the Caribbean sun, there is a breeze that helps to cool you down a little while you're there and the air is a lot fresher and unpolluted which I know would help your mother.
I am thinking it would be a good idea to enjoy a bit of time in Cartagena then take the short hop across to Isla Mucura and enjoy some relaxation with your family there.

I'll be in Colombia in November and have the good fortunes of having a personal driver while in Bogota and the surrounding area (I plan on going to Villa de Leyva on a side trip). However, I'm interested in flying up to the coast but haven't decided on where yet. Any suggestions on either Cartagena or Santa Marta? Are both equally beautiful with nice beaches or is there a big difference? Also, would it be feasible to take a bus between the two if I wanted to see both cities? I'll only be on the coast for 3 days. I've never been to Colombia so I'm really looking forward to it! Thanks for your help.

IMPORTANCIA DEL INGLÉS PARA LA INSTITUCIÓN
La importancia de esta asignatura para la Corporación Unificada de Educación Superior CUN radica en su propia preocupación por mejorar el nivel de competencia comunicativa en inglés, tanto de los estudiantes como de los docentes, optimizando su desempeño en contextos tan variados como la vida diaria, el trabajo, la universidad, la vida social y el placer. Los estudiantes tienen la posibilidad de personalizar la lengua que ellos aprenden y hacer uso de sus propias experiencias de vida.
La sociedad mundial del presente se caracteriza por el ritmo acelerado de los avances científicos y tecnológicos que han llevado a la humanidad a alcanzar progresos en todos los campos más rápido que en ningún otro momento de la historia. Ese progreso unido a los procesos de internacionalización han beneficiado radicalmente las comunicaciones y, de hecho, se está viviendo un tipo de comunicación que ha traspasado las barreras de la diversidad de lenguas para convertirse en una comunicación de tipo intercultural, por medio de la cual los pueblos se dan a conocer y se unen cada vez más en lo que se podría denominar “aldea global”. Desde hace mucho tiempo se ha tratado de buscar una lengua que permita unificar la sociedad internacional que le permita acceder a este nuevo mundo globalizado. Ante tal necesidad el inglés se ha posesionado poco a poco como la mejor candidata a cumplir con esa tarea.
Además de todas las oportunidades que se abren con el manejo de una lengua extranjera, el inglés se ha convertido en una herramienta muy importante para la educación. He aquí algunas razones por las cuales vale la pena aprenderlo:
• Es la lengua internacional más difundida y es un instrumento de comunicación estratégico en diversas áreas del desarrollo humano.
• Permite el acceso a becas y pasantías fuera del país, oportunidades educativas que se ofrecen en el exterior y que requieren niveles de desempeño específicos en inglés.
• Ofrece mayores y mejores oportunidades laborales.
• Facilita el intercambio de conocimientos y experiencias con otros países cuya lengua oficial es diferente al inglés, porque permite la comunicación a través de un idioma común y difundido.
El público en general percibe la enseñanza y el aprendizaje del inglés en las instituciones educativas como ineficaces y tanto la primera como el segundo se encuentran desprestigiados y limitados según la ciudadanía. La comunidad sostiene esta afirmación sobre la base de que atendiendo a los requerimientos de la Ley 115 de 1994, los estudiantes pasan aproximadamente 12 años aprendiendo un idioma extranjero y a pesar de ello terminan su escolaridad sin poder usarlo para comunicarse con efectividad. La mayoría de los estudiantes aún continúa teniendo un bajo nivel de inglés (menos A1 - A1: básico), el cual se deriva de la baja competencia comunicativa en lengua extranjera de la mayoría de los docentes del área (A1 - A2: básico). Estos valores se han podido observar en los diagnósticos del nivel de lengua de profesores y de estudiantes de grado 11, que el MEN viene adelantando desde el 2003.
Pero, como ya se dijo antes, ese fenómeno no se debe solamente al bajo nivel de desempeño en inglés de los docentes, sino también a otros agentes que intervienen en el proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje de la lengua extranjera: la metodología y los fundamentos institucionales que vivencian los intereses de las instituciones educativas con respecto a este tema según su P.E.I.
Ante esa percepción de la enseñanza y el aprendizaje de las lenguas extranjeras en las escuelas, colegios y universidades, muchos estudiosos del tema opinan que el problema radica primordialmente en los planteamientos pedagógicos que se llevan a cabo y, sobre todo, en que no se propone un enfoque metodológico adecuado. El manejo de una lengua extranjera depende en gran manera de la forma como ésta sea vista por el docente y los estudiantes, de la forma como la aborden, de sus expectativas con respecto a ella y a los procesos para su enseñanza y aprendizaje.
Caben aquí varios interrogantes: ¿Qué tan cierta resulta esa afirmación en estos días? ¿A qué se debe ese problema? ¿Qué hacer para solucionarlo?
Lograr que los estudiantes “se enamoren” de un idioma extranjero, en este caso del inglés, no siempre resulta una tarea fácil debido a que éstos, acostumbrados a estrategias poco efectivas, muchas veces se limitan a la simple traducción literal de palabras y, al comprobar que ese camino no conduce al fortalecimiento de la competencia comunicativa en esa lengua, pierden la motivación lo que redunda en falta de interés hacia la disciplina.
Tomándolo desde ese punto de vista se necesita lograr el fortalecimiento de las estrategias de aprendizaje de la lengua extranjera para desarrollar la competencia comunicativa en los estudiantes.
Hacia el futuro la CUN tendrá que invertir tiempo y esfuerzos para lograr más zonas, situaciones y lapsos de bilingüismo ambiental en la institución, donde haya abundantes posibilidades para emplear el nuevo idioma en espacios educativos que permitan su utilización en la cotidianidad. Para no perturbar el aprendizaje, se deben tomar en cuenta aspectos tales como la edad de los estudiantes, sus motivaciones y sobre todo proponer un enfoque metodológico adecuado.
La exigencia del inglés como vehículo de comunicación dentro de la CUN por parte de sus estamentos, especialmente de los estudiantes, será beneficiosa para la institución por cuanto por medio de él se podrán establecer metas en lengua y hacer seguimiento al avance de los estudiantes hacia el logro de las mismas. La implementación de esta asignatura con estándares de referenciación internacional traerá como un beneficio agregado la estimulación del estudiante la apertura de su mente, la aceptación y comprensión de nuevas culturas y la promoción del intercambio entre diferentes sociedades.

• Es la lengua internacional más difundida y es un instrumento de comunicación estratégico en diversas áreas del desarrollo humano.
• Permite el acceso a becas y pasantías fuera del país, oportunidades educativas que se ofrecen en el exterior y que requieren niveles de desempeño específicos en inglés.
• Ofrece mayores y mejores oportunidades laborales.
• Facilita el intercambio de conocimientos y experiencias con otros países cuya lengua oficial es diferente al inglés, porque permite la comunicación a través de un idioma común y difundido.
El público en general percibe la enseñanza y el aprendizaje del inglés en las instituciones educativas como ineficaces y tanto la primera como el segundo se encuentran desprestigiados y limitados según la ciudadanía. La comunidad sostiene esta afirmación sobre la base de que atendiendo a los requerimientos de la Ley 115 de 1994, los estudiantes pasan aproximadamente 12 años aprendiendo un idioma extranjero y a pesar de ello terminan su escolaridad sin poder usarlo para comunicarse con efectividad. La mayoría de los estudiantes aún continúa teniendo un bajo nivel de inglés (menos A1 - A1: básico), el cual se deriva de la baja competencia comunicativa en lengua extranjera de la mayoría de los docentes del área (A1 - A2: básico). Estos valores se han podido observar en los diagnósticos del nivel de lengua de profesores y de estudiantes de grado 11, que el MEN viene adelantando desde el 2003.
Pero, como ya se dijo antes, ese fenómeno no se debe solamente al bajo nivel de desempeño en inglés de los docentes, sino también a otros agentes que intervienen en el proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje de la lengua extranjera: la metodología y los fundamentos institucionales que vivencian los intereses de las instituciones educativas con respecto a este tema según su P.E.I.
Ante esa percepción de la enseñanza y el aprendizaje de las lenguas extranjeras en las escuelas, colegios y universidades, muchos estudiosos del tema opinan que el problema radica primordialmente en los planteamientos pedagógicos que se llevan a cabo y, sobre todo, en que no se propone un enfoque metodológico adecuado. El manejo de una lengua extranjera depende en gran manera de la forma como ésta sea vista por el docente y los estudiantes, de la forma como la aborden, de sus expectativas con respecto a ella y a los procesos para su enseñanza y aprendizaje.
Caben aquí varios interrogantes: ¿Qué tan cierta resulta esa afirmación en estos días? ¿A qué se debe ese problema? ¿Qué hacer para solucionarlo?
Lograr que los estudiantes “se enamoren” de un idioma extranjero, en este caso del inglés, no siempre resulta una tarea fácil debido a que éstos, acostumbrados a estrategias poco efectivas, muchas veces se limitan a la simple traducción literal de palabras y, al comprobar que ese camino no conduce al fortalecimiento de la competencia comunicativa en esa lengua, pierden la motivación lo que redunda en falta de interés hacia la disciplina.
Tomándolo desde ese punto de vista se necesita lograr el fortalecimiento de las estrategias de aprendizaje de la lengua extranjera para desarrollar la competencia comunicativa en los estudiantes.
Hacia el futuro la CUN tendrá que invertir tiempo y esfuerzos para lograr más zonas, situaciones y lapsos de bilingüismo ambiental en la institución, donde haya abundantes posibilidades para emplear el nuevo idioma en espacios educativos que permitan su utilización en la cotidianidad. Para no perturbar el aprendizaje, se deben tomar en cuenta aspectos tales como la edad de los estudiantes, sus motivaciones y sobre todo proponer un enfoque metodológico adecuado.
La exigencia del inglés como vehículo de comunicación dentro de la CUN por parte de sus estamentos, especialmente de los estudiantes, será beneficiosa para la institución por cuanto por medio de él se podrán establecer metas en lengua y hacer seguimiento al avance de los estudiantes hacia el logro de las mismas. La implementación de esta asignatura con estándares de referenciación internacional traerá como un beneficio agregado la estimulación del estudiante la apertura de su mente, la aceptación y comprensión de nuevas culturas y la promoción del intercambio entre diferentes sociedades.
